Fault Finding & Repair

When you report a fault on your line the telephone service provider (SP) will carry out a remote line test. They should then be able to advise you if the fault is in the External network or in towards your internal wiring. If the fault is in the external Network your SP is responsible & you should not be charged. If however the test result indicates a fault on your internal wiring you should expect to be charged. Your SP is only responsible for the phone wiring up to your master socket (NTE5). All wiring after the NTE5 is yours. I will carry out a local test to diagnose any faults and if it's on your wiring, can repair it.

 Broadband.

Problems with your broadband dropping the connection or with slow speeds? Then your internal wiring may be at fault. I can diagnose and repair faults caused by your phone wiring or sockets to increase the stability & speed of your ADSL connection.

"Diagnosed and cured sluggish broadband speeds.David was quietly efficient in tracking down the problem wiring and replacing it. He was careful to explain all the options as he proceeded, and delivered exactly the download speeds he promised (twice as fast as I had ever achieved). All in all, an excellent service."

Broadband Problems & ADSL faceplate filter

Telephone wiring within a property can pick up interference (noise) from electric mains wiring & appliances.  This noise will reduce the broadband speed.

Broadband speed problems are not an exact science & results can be hard to predict, however the very best speed that can possibly be obtained is if you connect your router at your master socket. Your master socket should be connected to the incoming telephone line feed. All your extension sockets should be connected to the removable faceplate. For best results the face plate should be an ADSL filtered one. The less extension wiring you have the less chance there is that noise will be 'picked up'.
All Telephone sockets (that have anything plugged in) must have a micro-filter, unless an ADSL faceplate filter is connected at the master socket.
Connecting a faceplate filter at the master socket prevents the broadband signal from going out onto the extension wiring, this in turn helps stop the noise interfering with the broadband signal.
The other big advantage to a faceplate filter is that it replaces all the micro-filters connected throughout the house, so it all looks a lot tidier.

ADSL performance may be affected by any or all of the following

  • The 'line profile' that your ISP has set.

  • The length of copper wire from your property to the Telephone exchange - this is always higher than the distance 'as the crow flies'.

  • The quality of this wire, with no bad joints, faulty insulation or aluminium conductors.

  • The number and type of other digital services being used by other customers over copper pairs within the same cable. In particular "split pairs" will cause overhearing or crosstalk.

  • Electromagnetic interference from outside, such as electric motors, electric fences etc.

  • Electromagnetic interference from inside, such as power units, lighting, central heating etc.

  • The configuration of the wiring within your property (i.e. the use an ADSL faceplate filter for best performance).

  • The performance of your PC, spyware, software configuration etc.

The most effective way to improve ADSL performance is to have a Telephone Engineer remove any star wiring before the Master socket & install an ADSL faceplate filter.

The other important thing to do is ensure that Electromagnet interference from inside your property is not affecting performance, again this is something I will check.

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) is also known a Radio Frequency interference (RFI) .

ADSL & line length

The longer the line, the higher the loss (db)

All figures are an approx guide & show how the line attenuation affects ADSL sync speed. Also it can be seen that with a long line (attenuation of 50db plus) 24mbit service is no faster than an 8mbit service.

ADLS2+   (24MBit)        ADSL2 (12Mbit)       ADSL1

Loss                                Sync  (approx)

23db       19Mbit                  12Mbit                  8Mbit

29db        16Mbit                 10Mbit                  8MBit

35db        12Mbit                 9Mbit                    7Mbit

40db        10Mbit                 8Mbit                   6.5Mbit

45db        7Mbit                   6Mbit                    6Mbit

Wireless problems

Do you want to extend the range of your wireless network? I can offer various solutions, although I would always recommend option 1.

Option 1.Install a CAT5 cable from your current wireless router to a new remote router, set up as a wireless access point. In my opinion this is, by far, the most reliable & most effective solution.

Option 2.Set up a pair of wireless routers to "talk" to each other. With this option the remote router has to be well within range of the first router & can be unreliable.

Option 3.Install power plug type devices. These can be successful, but can sometimes be impossible to use due to issues with the mains wiring.

 Telephone conversions

I am often asked if I will convert an old GPO dial phone to work with a standard BT phone socket - The answer is sorry, but No. However I suggest you type  "GPO TELEPHONE CONVERSIONS" into google where you will find what you need.
